We Lost the Race

We have been racing the winter weather, trying to get the shed finished. Winter won. We did get the roof on ahead of the snow, but we’ve called it quits until spring with the build incomplete. The doors are up but the two windows on the front aren’t. We’ve stapled vapor barrier over the inside (and will add a layer on the outside, too), but triming the window holes and getting the windows properly installed will wait for more pleasant weather. The corners of the building still need trim, also, and none of the inside work is done. There will be a wall separating the shed from the greenhouse (with a door and a window), a potting bench, shelving, a bathing nook, evebtualy a rocket mass heater… plus come spring also we will be building a 12×12 patio/courtyard area immediately in front of the greehouse. This will serve several purposes:

  • 2 test-build cordwood walls
  • With patio stones and abundant lemon thyme, this should be a place where doing laundry is comfortable in the good weather
  • Should provide a wamer microclimate area for my more tender plants
  • A clothesline off the top of the wall will serve for airing bedding, as our regular line is too close to the ground
  • The walls will provide an extra layer of privacy for the bathing area in the greenhouse.

There are always more projects than there is money or time, but we plug away at it. We have the house build slated to begin next spring/summer, too, so we will be busy.

I hope my potted trees survive their time in the unprotected outdoors. I’ll get them moved into the greenhouse on the weekend (assuming I can find them in the snow), and in the meantime there is about a foot of snow on top of them to protect from the worst of the weather..
