Today was earth and plants
After breakfast, off to the garden center an hour away. They have the best vegetable sets and their selection of food-bearing trees is better than most. I was looking specifically for elderberry, because mine died, but they didn’t have it. I did get two heartnut saplings. The one I have is trying to decide if it survived the winter or not. If it recovers, I will have 3. Otherwise, I have 2. I also found out that my shrub I bought under the name ‘almond berry’ is in fact a serviceberry. Which is awesome.
I also got the veg and herbs I was looking for, and 2 lbs of white (creeping, dutch) clover seed, which I intend to seed heavily over my mucky areas.
Groceries, then home.
Finished filling the garden bed, got that raked out fluffy and smooth, and then I planted my garden. In my single 4×8 bed, I have
- Corn (black, flour variety)
- Sunflowers
- Black, red and yellow carrots
- Purple string beans
- Black chickpeas
- Purple hulled pinkeye cowpeas
- Tomatoes
- Green and yellow bell peppers
- Arugula
- Eggplant
- Celery
- Cabbages
- Mace marigold
- Calendula
- Grey poppies
In my cistern – turned – planter right next to the bed are zucchini and arugula.
Tomorrow, I will fill planters and plant my winter squashes and various of the summer flowers and herbs. I acquired my 5th tire today, and painted it this evening, so tomorrow I will also be finishing that planting space and getting my kitchen herbs set up.
I planted my replacement blueberry, but I still have the pawpaws and now the new nut trees to plant. Progress is happening, though.
