A Tiny Hell

Well, to be frank, last night sucked. Big time.

As soon as the sun set, we were entirely overwhelmed by mosquitos. They were coming in around the door, the windows, down from the loft (where they entered as a thundering army through the main loft door). There were hundreds of them. It was our own little horror movie, with an army of blood-hungry, mostly-invisible vampires after us.

Husband dislikes mosquitos. Intensely. And as he had already had 2 nights without sleep and a lost day of work, he was NOT in a happy mood. He rampaged with the fly swatter in one hand and a lantern in the other, and decorated the walls and floor with the dead, cursing their existance.

I can’t say as I like them either, but I wasnt in as bad a mood. Mostly, I was worried about the youngest child. The older two were having a sleepover elsewhere, but the youngest, asleep in bed, was being devoured. When it became clear we could not hold the line against them, we bundled the child into a bee suit and made a bed on the couch.

We fought them awhile longer, but ultimately, we surrendered to the inevitable and bundled OURSEVES into bee suits also. It was extremely hot yesterday, so the suits were uncomfortable on several levels, but it was still better than involuntary blood donation.

Today was entirely reactionary. Off to the hardware store for more spray foam to close up the gaps around the windows and door. Upstairs to spray high-concentration garlic oil liberally on the external and internal loft doors. Tape the hinge gaps on the internal doors. Hunt down and kill as many leftover mosquitos as possible in the daylight.

This evening, the story is very different. We have killed a few, and I can still hear one, but nowhere near the Imperial army of skytroopers that we had yesterday. Is this solely due to my efforts today? I have no idea. It is considerably colder today (like 20 degrees colder), and wet and windy. So the weather alone could be part of it. The only way to know for sure is to wait and see.

And sleep in bee suits, when the occasion calls for it.

The bug zapper is due tomorrow, and after that, hopefully, it won’t matter.

Whether weather, extruded polystyrene products, heavy-weight oil of allium, or a combination thereof, I thank God for it. Sleeping should be a thing tonight
