Steeling Ourselves

Other than putting a few panels on the outside of out tent garage (in retrospect we did EVERYTHING incorrectly), I have never handled steel in my life. Husband got a bit of a tutoring whilst securing the roof, but when it comes to things like windows and doors, he has never done steel either. But then, we haven’t know what we were doing on any part of this project, so nothing new there. We shall do what we have done so many times before: just start, and see what happens. Make adjustments as we learn.

The first couple sheets were pretty straightforward. Mark where the strapping is, predrill the holes, stand the steel on end, lift into place, zip it in with the impact driver. Easy peasy

…Then came the first doorway, and straightforward went out the window. Figuring out how to slide the sheets of relatively inflexible steel around and behind trimmed cutouts was a new and frustrating challenge. That first one took us hours. And we did it allll wrong, and it ended up super ugly, so we’re just going to pretend that piece doesn’t exist for the rest of our lives. But we learned a lot. The next time there was a cutout, we did it better.

It was very warm that day. The later in the day it got, the more things thawed. We ended up being dripped on incessantly and nearly ankle deep in muck

The first wall took us two days. It was where we learned the basic skills we would need for the more complicated walls to come.

We ended up with one sheet extra.

Looks pretty good, if I do say so myself.
